Freshman to Grad Student: Embracing Finals Week

Hi everyone! I know I have been quite inconsistent with posting lately, but school has really gotten the best of me this semester!

It has been a roller coaster of emotions these last few weeks and I can feel the stress rising as I walk into finals week. For any one in college, you know the crazy stress and anxiety that comes with this dreaded week packed full of exams.

As I catch myself drowning in self pity, I realize I one am not the only human going through this and two that none of this stress is worth a damn thing! As my school career begins to come to a close, I began reflecting back on my many years as college student.

I look back to when I was a freshman. Little Becca, lost among piles of notes, studying til the crack of dawn determined not to miss a single detail on any exam. These were the years coffee seemingly became my best friend. I would stay up for as long as I could until I unwillingly fell asleep attempting to shove a semesters worth of information into brain in just a few days. Raccoon eyes became my signature look by the end of the week.

Now, I’d like to believe that age and experience helped me to conquer the many finals weeks I have encountered in my college career. Many deem this week THE most important weeks of the semester, mostly because that one exam could make or break all of your hard work over the entire semester, but it’s no big deal right?

Okay, yes finals week is important and it can be crucial but rather than drown ourselves in self pity, stressing over every minuscule detail; why not embrace the suck?

As I head into my last finals week for FOREVER, yes I said forever! (Well one can only hope!) I thought why not share some of my wisdom and help you all learn to EMBRACE finals week!

First, and what I think is most important, sleep. Those days of staying up til the sun comes up, yeah they’re over! I know you’ve heard it a million times, but I truly can not stress enough how important sleep is for your body. Trust me, all that information you have been working so hard to cram into your head will NOT last for long if you’re running on little sleep and shots of espresso! There is no better feeling in the world then waking up to a beautiful nights rest!

It’s time to put down that cup of coffee and go grab you your water bottle, because it’s time to re-hydrate. I know, it feels like your cheating when you’re ditching your coffee for water but it is absolutely worth it! Dehydration can cause irritability, dizziness, headaches, and drowsiness. All of which do NOT aide in our ability to concentrate and study! So, take another sip of that water!

Next tip of advice I have is, do not CRAM! I promise you cramming is not going to get you anywhere. I guarantee by next week you won’t even remember what you were even studying last week! Do the best you can to try and plan in advance. Create a study schedule, this one thing I found made a significant difference in my finals weeks over the years.

I know earlier I said sleep was the most important, but I think this last point might be. (Heck, all of them are important) Sitting for hours and hours on end with your head crammed between pages of notes can be incredibly brutal and literally sucks the life out of you. Get up and move, make time for a solid gym session; whatever it may be just be sure to get up and be active! Getting up and moving wakes up our body and our minds! It gives us the adrenaline rush we need to power through studying!

I may be going through my last finals week of my college career, but I am still learning much like you all! I am still figuring out how to embrace the suck of finals week! My goal for thisfinal We are all in this together, just like Zac Efron sang in High School Muscial!

My goal for this final week is to try and reach my 10,000 step goal every day! What will your goal be during finals week?

We are all in this together, just like Zac Efron sang in High School Muscial! Now, go crush your finals week!

Best Wishes,

  1. Good luck with finals!!! Love that you incorporated self care into your week. I’m sure you will find the 10,000 steps a day will help burn off any anxiety you may have. My goal this week is to reach the finish line of this StepBet!!! And drinking my water which has always been a struggle for me. But I’m getting it done. Good luck 😊
